Cast on any number of stitches.

Knit 5 rows of garter stitch (all knit rows).

Start of pattern

Row 1: knit

Row 2: k5, purl to last 5 st's, k5

Row 3: k5, *yfwd, k2tog* repeat until last 5 st's, k5.

Row 4: k5, purl to last 5 st's, k5.

Row 5: k

Row 6: k

Row 7: k

Row 8: k5, *p1, k1* repeat to last 5 st's, k5.

Row 9: k

Row 10: k

repeat these 10 rows until desired length (until your square is square) then knit 5 rows of garter stitch. Cast off.

Abbreviations used

yfwd: bring yarn to front of work as if you were to purl, this just makes a loose stitch when doing a knit stitch.
